Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA):  CompTIA offers vender-neutral certifications and is a worldwide nonprofit organization.  CompTIA started in 1982, and offered A+ as the first certification exam in 1993.  Its professional certifications cover the technical skills and knowledge needed to succeed in such diverse subjects as networking, applications, operating systems, security, project management, and computer repair.  CompTIA (2011) has a number of certifications; below are the most recognized of these certifications:

The CompTIA A+ certification is the industry standard for computer support technicians. The A+ certification provides a solid foundation for anyone interested in entering the IT field. Start your IT career as a PC Technician, Desktop Support, Help Desk, or building computers. We will teach you how to take personal computer (PC) apart, repairing, installing, configuring, and troubleshooting Hardware as well as Software. Many of our students earn their A+ certification within six weeks. This course provides comprehensive training for students who already have some existing knowledge of, desktop, notebook, networking computers running any windows OS. This course will prepare students with the knowledge and skills to find a job in market place.
 
CompTIA Network+ Certification: Covers managing, maintaining, installing, configuring, troubleshooting, operating systems, and basic network infrastructure.
 
CompTIA Security+ Certification: Covers various security systems, network infrastructure, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), cryptography, Cyber security, and audits.
 
CompTIA Server+ Certification: Covers areas on server-specific software operating systems, hardware such as RAID, SCSI, fault-tolerance, clustering, managing multiple servers, and disaster recovery.
 
 

CompTIA A+ Training has Two parts:

1. CompTIA A+ Essentials: measures the necessary competencies of an entry-level IT professional with a recommended 500 hours of hands-on experience in the lab or field. It tests for technical understanding of computer technology, networking and security, as well as the communication skills and professionalism now required of all entry-level IT professionals.

2. CompTIA A+ Practical Application: is an extension of the knowledge and skills identified in CompTIA A+ Essentials, with more of a "hands-on" orientation focused on scenarios in which troubleshooting and tools must be applied to resolve problems.

Required Exams: CompTIA A+ consists of two exams needed for certification

 CompTIA (A+) Essentials Exam 220-801 & 220-802: validates knowledge of basic computer hardware and operating systems, covering skills such as installation, building, upgrading, repairing,  configuring, troubleshooting, optimizing, diagnosing and preventive maintenance, with additional elements of security and soft skills.

CompTIA (A+) Practical exam 220-901 & 902: measures key abilities for an entry-level IT professional with hands-on lab or field experience. This exam validates skills such as installing, configuring, upgrading, maintaining, troubleshooting PC workstations and SOHO networks. Examples of job roles include: Enterprise Technician, IT Administrator, Field Service Technician and PC Technician.
